Merlin's Magic Motion Machines are roller coaster rides that are designed to send you for the journey of your life. For $4 a ride for Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, you can experience terror in an action packed four minute ride that will leave you breathless and wanting more. You should make certain you heed the caution signs, as these rides are really intense.
Excalibur Pools
The Excalibur pools are highly popular with younger crowds, as it possesses a water slide and a lot of swimming space. The concrete area is surprisingly nice, accented with a variety of rock based waterfalls and plants to break the monotony of the concrete. The pool further from the pool area entrance sports extra shade, and there is no shortage of chairs for those wishing to bask in the sun.
Room Quality:
Clean rooms with modest furnishings including decent resting chairs. The casino theme of Victorian antiques is sort of ignored in the rooms, which are more modern. The beds are comfortable and the sitting area is average. The bathrooms are bland, but functional. Rooms on the top floors have mini-fridges. The hotel abuts the freeway on one side and railroad tracks on another, so if you're a light sleeper be sure to ask for something high and away from these distractions. If you want a view of the Strip and the other downtown casinos, ask for an odd numbered room. Even numbers face North Las Vegas and the highway, which may bother light sleepers on low floors. The lower the room number on the floor, the farther from the train tracks you'll be.
Service Quality:
Good, but it is a smaller hotel, so they don't have a lot of amenities. They will happily deliver an iron or extra towels, but there is no spa or masseusse you can call to your room. Check-in and check-out are quick thanks to the hotel's size. Staff is friendly.

The Wynn Resort sports a 150 foot tall fountain that contains five different tiers. The fountain falls into a man-made lake. This is named the Lake of Dreams. There is a light show that changes the color of the lake a variety of bright, rich hues.
Restaurants
There are 18 new restaurants located within the Wynn Resort. The Wynn Hotel Lobby is decorated in bold red, green and brown hues, and is decorated with rich fabrics and fine fixtures. The restaurants are no less impressive. Inside the resort, aside from the main tower of the hotel is a suites structure. This suite tower is home to Tableau, which is a semi-private restaurant. Dinner here is open to the public, however, breakfast and lunch use is limited to guests of the suites.
Casino
Spanning a massive 111,000 square feet, The Wynn Resort and Hotel has a variety of different slot and card games, as well as dice games. It is designed to be as elegant as the rest of the structure, with intricate woodwork and delicate chandeliers, matching the fame and beauty of the Venetian and the Bellagio casinos.

For those who want to spend more time than money in Las Vegas, here are 21 things to do for less than $21, all aimed at keeping the bottom line low and the fun factor high.
1. Springs Preserve. Forsake the fake pyramid and fake Statue of Liberty for a power walk through the real Vegas: 110 acres of pre-Bugsy Siegel desert. There are miles of cactus-filled trails, botanic gardens and a museum that pays tribute to the city's Mojave Desert roots. 2. Hoover Dam Bypass. The Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, as it's officially known, opened two years ago to ease traffic congestion at Hoover Dam. The bridge, about 35 miles south of Las Vegas, became an instant landmark for its breathtaking views of the dam and the Colorado River. 3. Can you say Chi-hu-ly? Glass man Dale Chihuly seems to be everywhere in Vegas. The chandelier in the lobby of the Bellagio is a must-see, with layers and layers of glass flowers and petals in the massive sculpture. 5. Bird-watching at the Flamingo Hotel. 7. Picture with a Vegas showgirl. Take home a souvenir that captures the glamour of Las Vegas. (You could always say you were in the show.) 8. Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas. It's not as adrenaline-pumping as the Stratosphere Tower ride, but going 460 feet up the Eiffel Tower (half the scale of the real one) offers spectacular panoramas of the Strip — without being strapped in. Why not create your own "Midnight in Paris" moment? 10. The Mob Museum. No one goes to Las Vegas to visit a museum, but the hottest new attraction in town may be the National Museum of Organized Crime & Law Enforcement. Exhibits give equal time to crime figures such as Bugsy Siegel and Al Capone and the men who pursued them, from J. Edgar Hoover to Rudy Giuliani. 14. Fine-art galleries. Cash in your chips and spend an afternoon with Monet at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art through the end of the year. Picasso, Chagall and Andy Warhol also join the Vegas lineup in the new Martin Lawrence Galleries, free to enter at the Forum Shops at Caesars.
15. Main Street Station Antiques. Grab a brochure for a self-guided tour of the unusual artifacts in this turn-of-the-last-century-style casino. 16. M&M's World. The four-story chocolatorium joins the old-school candy stop in Vegas — a tour of the Ethel M factory in Henderson, Nev. It's free to wander the shop's four stories, watch a 10-minute movie ("I Lost My M in Vegas," starring Red and Yellow), chat with roving Ms and discover 22 M&M colors (teal, lime green, hot pink, etc). 21. "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign. Commercial artist Betty Willis designed the flashy, Midcentury sign that has become a Sin City icon. scoring a winning stay
Your chances of hitting a jackpot in Vegas are, sadly, slim. But scoring a stay without hassles or breaking the bank isn't hard, once you know which plays to make. USA TODAY's Kitty Bean Yancey , with the help of Vegas insiders, shares 10 strategies for a winning getaway.
1. Know when to go.
Rates generally are lowest Sunday to Thursday when big conventions aren't in town. If dates are flexible, resort websites make planning easy, with monthly calendars showing the lowest rates for each day. For instance, rooms at the upscale Bellagio are running $149-$399 in coming months, depending on the date. July and mid-December often are slow.
Strip hotels tend to be pricier than those downtown. But downtown is revitalizing, and gamers like its lower betting minimums. Websites such as LasVegasAdvisor.com track and obtain deals (learn about many for free or pay $37 to join for coupons and newsletters). The Advisor is finding nightly specials as low as "the teens and twenties," it says. Vegas.com and other sites also negotiate discounts, and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's VisitLasVegas.com posts promotions. Check air/hotel packages and resort Web specials. But factor resort fees into the bottom line. Now $25 at some places, they usually include Internet but can turn a $60 hotel steal into a $90-plus proposition, with tax. Caesars Entertainment resorts (Caesars Palace, Paris, Rio and others) don't charge resort fees, though you pay extra for Internet. That can mean $14.99 in-room daily/$24.99 property-wide at Caesars Palace if you want to use it. Ask: "Do I want to save money on a room and go to great shows and restaurants, or have a five-star (resort) experience?" Vegas.com marketing director Paul Mello advises.
3. Get a deal on wheels.
Taxis aren't cheap when Strip traffic is gridlocked on weekends. You often wait in line at the airport or resorts for one. But taxis are a boon for imbibers and those who don't know Vegas. A key phrase to use when going between the Strip and airport: "Don't take the tunnel," which usually runs up the fare. Rental cars are a winning option, with rates as low as less than $10 a day and free self-parking at casino resorts. Learn routes to avoid Las Vegas Boulevard, such as Paradise Road, Harmon Avenue or Dean Martin Drive. The Las Vegas Monorail goes to many spots on the Strip ($28 for three days), and the gold-colored Deuce buses ($7 a day) cruise the Strip and go downtown.
4. Be a player.
Yes, the house usually wins. (You're better off at table games than slots, former pro gambler and Las Vegas Advisor president Anthony Curtis says.) Always join the players club at casinos or resorts where you'll spend time. Membership is free and brings sign-up bonuses such as free gaming. Also rack up points for dining and at shops to get buffet discounts and cheaper lodging (comped rooms now rarely go to the average gambler). Curtis likes the Tropicana's lure for new members: up to $200 in free slot play if you lose. He's also a fan of the $7.99 steak meal for members at Ellis Island Casino & Brewery: sirloin, soup or salad, potato, vegetable and a beer.
5. Slurp at happy hours, shovel in restaurant deals.
Want to eat cheap? How about $1 happy-hour oysters at P.J. Clarke's or $1 frozen margaritas and Michelobs 24/7 at the Casino Royale's bar on the Strip. Eat where locals do — off the Strip — such as at Le Thai downtown, where copious, well-prepared dishes that can serve two are less than $10. But high-end resorts host meal deals: Estiatorio Milos in The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas sells a three-course weekday lunch for $20.12. Buffets on the Strip often are in the $20 range for lunch, $30 for dinner, but if you like pigging out, snap up the $32 all-day pass for both the Luxor and Excalibur buffets or the "Buffet of Buffets" pass, offering 24 hours of non-stop eating at six resorts (Rio, Paris, Planet Hollywood, Harrah's, Flamingo, Imperial Palace). It's $44.99 for players clubbers; $49.99 for others.
6. See a show below the going rate.
Head to Tix4Tonight outlets (locations at tix4tonight.com) and see what's heavily discounted that day. Cirque du Soleil shows run in the $100 range, but Vegas websites including BestofVegas.com offer discounts. Caesars Entertainment has a deal: a $99 All Stage Pass, which lets you see as many shows and attractions as you can in 48 hours for $99 plus tax for Total Rewards members ($119 for others). Choose from 22, including afternoon offerings.
7. Don't forget Vegas' free attractions.
They include Bellagio's dancing fountains; nightly "battles" between pirates and the Sirens of TI in front of the Treasure Island resort; the seasonally decorated Conservatory at Bellagio; the spewing volcano at The Mirage; Carnival-themed "Show in the Sky" at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino; and the light and music shows at the Fremont Street Experience downtown. The lion habitat at the MGM Grand has closed, by the way.
Gaining entrance to hot clubs or party pools needn't require a wait. "The safest way is to call directly" to get on the all-important "list," says Nick Cope, VIP marketing host at PURE nightclub and the Venus Pool Club at Caesars Palace. Question 1: As a follow-up to your answer to today's question (QoD 4/9/10) about casino hosts, my question is, how much do you need to bring to Vegas in order for the casino hosts to be interested in hosting you? Question 2: What size bankroll does one need in order to feel they can enlist the services of a casino host? If you tell them you have a certain size bankroll and you don't put it in action, what can you expect the repercussions to be, if any?

We received a number of similar questions after running yet another Q&A on casino hosts, a topic that solicits regular questions and never fails to inspire a flurry when we run one.
Actually, there’s nothing mysterious about bankroll requirements in terms of a casino marketing executive’s criteria for hosting players. Fact is, the requirements and criteria not only aren’t set in stone, but differ from casino to casino and sometimes host to host; they can also change over time.
Always remember that hosts are there to service you. You need to play their games, but they need to give you good reasons to do so. You can probably find a host (or a boss, who doubles as a host at the smaller casinos that don't have dedicated marketing execs) for whatever your level of action.
It all depends on what you play, where you play, and what you’re looking for in return for your play.
If you’re a baccarat enthusiast who brings $2 million and likes to make $50,000 bets, call the MGM Grand and talk to a host about flying in on a company jet and staying at the Mansion with a butler and personal chef.
If you’re a crapshooter who makes $10 pass line bets with single odds, call the Hats and Horns and talk to a boss about a buffet for two and comped tickets to Nudes On Ice (a fictitious example in order not to quote any real numbers at a real casino).
Say you’re looking for a nice $250 dinner at Hugo’s Cellar for your 25th anniversary. Call a host at the Four Queens and ask for the play requirement. If the answer, $50 a hand for four hours, is a little rich for your blood, ask about a $150 comp. If it’s still too much, call the Golden Nugget and ask about dinner at the Grotto. (Or if your heart is really set on Hugo’s, pay retail; that way you know exactly what you’re buying and how much it’s going to cost.)
Or say you want to stay at the Mirage in a mini-suite. Call ’em up and ask. The $50 a hand for four hours is too much? Ask about a slow night -- Monday or Tuesday. Maybe the average bet times play hours will go down somewhat. Or maybe you decide you’d just like a standard room. Or maybe you realize you don’t mind staying at the Monte Carlo after all, where they want four hours at only $25 a hand.
Are you a dollar slot player? Call around; see what you can get from various slot hosts. Start low and bargain up.
Are you a five-dollar video poker player? There might be a limited number of casinos with good schedules (hopefully, you’re playing positive expectation games using proper strategy), but you should qualify for pretty decent comps at that level. Shop and compare for best results.
Another idea is to frequent online message forums, such as the Comps board at LasVegasAdvisor.com. A quick look just now reveals that dinner for two at Second Street Grille at the Fremont goes for $25 for four hours. With that information, you can call up a host/boss at the Fremont and compare what he says to what you know.
What if a host tells you that you should come in, play, and pay, and he'll review your action at the end of your stay, then write down/off your room and food bill? Some players are all right with this arrangement in the beginning, especially if it’s a casino that they really like. If they’re planning on staying and playing there anyway and they don’t mind paying retail if their action doesn’t cover their expenses, at least they get a little information out of it. Others feel like they’re buying something without knowing how much it costs; they don't like surprises at the end of their trip.
Once you find a host who appreciates your play at a property you like, cultivate him. The "care and feeding" of a host is an art form and a lot’s been written about it -- by Jean Scott in her Frugal series and Deke Castleman in Whale Hunt in the Desert, to name a couple. But the better you get to know hosts, the more conversant you’ll be with the systems at the casinos you frequent and the better your relationship with the casinos will be.
A good host, meanwhile, will be cultivating you in return.
As for the repercussions for not living up to your end of the play-comp bargain, you won’t be visited by security or the police. Your kneecaps won't have a little chat with a sledge hammer. But you will burn a bridge and if it’s at a multi-casino company, hosts at all the other company casinos will be able to call up your info and see that you’re a deadbeat. It’s bad form to overstate your bankroll and/or minimum bets or your intention to play for more hours than you do.
Remember, a host can do a lot of discretionary things for you. Jean Scott is a master at befriending hosts and getting all kinds of goodies, whether her play merits them or not (usually it does, but not always) and she has plenty of tips in her books. So if you want to make a study of the host game, that’s the place to start. If you just want to jump in and see how it works, start calling the casinos, ask for the VIP departments, and ask ask ask.

Lower freebie rates for video poker players reflect payback realties

In the eyes of casino operators, not all players are created equal. Depending on what we play, how fast we play, how much money we put at risk and how often we return to do it all again, some of us are more valuable to the house than others.
This becomes apparent up at comp time, whether we take our rewards in cash, free play, meals, hotel rooms or other amenities. Those whose playing patterns are most likely to pad the casino’s bottom line get the most stuff.
This brings me to an email I received from a disgruntled video poker player, who was unhappy with his take from a player rewards program. It was from a reader named Jack, who asked, “Can you tell me why they now penalize video poker players by awarding us fewer points than slot players?”
This is easy enough to answer. Many, perhaps even most casinos give fewer rewards points on video poker because payback percentages are higher than on slot machines. If I’m a casino operator who offers 9-6 Jacks or Better, returning 99.5 percent with expert play, am I going to hand out as much free play per dollar played as I do to a penny slot player who spots me 10 percent by playing games that pay 90 percent or less? No, I am not.
Hence the dual reward formulas that are common in casinos today. I’ve seen many a program that requires twice as much play to earn a point on video poker as it does on slots. I shrug it off, play the games I want to play, and take whatever rewards come my way.
I ran this past my brother Jay, an occasional video poker player who sometimes dabbles in the low-denom slots, to make sure an average player would get it. “That only makes sense,” he said. “They want to give an incentive to come back to the players who leave the most money behind.”
Yep, that’s it. Still, the question hit home because one of the casinos on my regular rounds had just made a major change to both the quality of its video poker games and the structure of its rewards program. In the last few years, it has reduced video poker pay tables, then reduced them again so that even choosy players could do no better than games with about a 97 percent return with expert play.
Downturns can become upturns, and in December their pay tables on at least a few machines returned to their former glory, with a Joker Poker version that returns 99.9 percent with expert play, Not So Ugly Deuces Wild (99.7), 9-6 Jacks or Better (99.5), 8-5 Bonus Poker (99.2) and more.
The tradeoff? Lower rewards rates for the selective players who seek out those games. And not just rewards reduced by half. Rewards that were reduced tenfold from other video poker games, which are already half of those on slot machines.
Here’s the way it works. It takes 100 points to redeem for $1 in free play. Slot players get a point for every $5 wagered, and most video poker players get a point for every $10 wagered. But those who choose the cream of the crop video poker games must wager $100 to earn a point.
To put it on a percentage basis, slot players get 0.2 percent of their wagered returned to them in the form of free play. Most video poker players get 0.1 percent. Those who play the best video poker games get only 0.01 percent.
And you know who’s getting the best deal? Those who are getting the least free play, especially if they take time to learn the correct strategy for the games they play.
We can do a little simple arithmetic. Let’s say you make $1,000 worth of bets on a penny slot machine paying 90 percent—probably a couple of percentage points less in most jurisdictions, but we’ll make it 90 for easy calculations. On average, the machine pays you $900. You get 200 slot points, worth $2 in cash back. You have a total of $902 of your original grand.
On a $1 slot paying about 95 percent, your $1,000 brings you back $950 from the machine, and your $2 worth of slot points brings that up to $952.
Switch to video poker and play 8-5 Jacks or Better, paying 97.3 percent with expert play, and your average return per $1,000 is $973. You only get 100 player rewards points, worth $1, but your total of $974 is still higher than the slot players are getting.
Move on up to 9-6 Jacks or Better, and if you play at expert level your average return is 99.5 percent, or $995 per $1,000 wagered. In this system, you’ll earn a mere 10 slot points, worth just a dime. The casino won’t let you redeem such a low amount, but your $995 return still is miles ahead of anything slot players or customers on lower-paying video poker games are getting.
Your video poker skill level makes a difference. If you don’t play at expert level and are getting only 95 percent or so out of 8-5 Jacks or Better, then you’re getting about the same payback percentage as a dollar slot player, but getting half the rewards.
And details vary in different rewards programs. Some give much more in free play, some give less, and a few casinos have tried giving no points at all on the highest-paying video poker games. Bounce-back vouchers for extra rewards figure into any final calculations, too. But when all bets and rewards have been tallied, the biggest returns still go to the video poker players who play the best games well.
